Your GE Zenith transfer switch is discontinued. That is not the same as gone.

ABB took over GE’s Industrial Solutions business in 2018 and has since retired the GE Zenith transfer switch line. The ZTG and ZTGD series, the ZT3000 multi-source systems and the MX150 / MX250 controllers are no longer built, and most factory replacement parts have gone with them. You have three real options — and buying a new switch is only one of them.

What happened

Nothing failed. A product line changed hands.

Zenith Controls became part of GE, GE’s electrical products business became part of ABB, and ABB rationalised the catalogue it inherited. That is the whole story. It is an ownership decision, not a verdict on your equipment.

Which matters, because the two are constantly confused. A discontinued transfer switch is not a recalled transfer switch and it is not an unsafe one. The power section of one of these — the enclosure, the busbar, the main contacts — routinely outlasts the building it was installed in. What runs out first is the catalogue number, then the spare parts, then the engineer who remembers the controller. None of that is the same as the switch being finished.

The three-source ZT3000 family is the sharp one. Where a two-source switch has an ABB equivalent you can at least be pointed at, the multi-source systems were retired without one. If you are running a three-source scheme on a ZT3000 and it fails, the catalogue has no answer for you at all — which is exactly the situation this page exists for.

Most people arrive here assuming they are facing a full switchgear replacement. Usually they are not.

Buy the ABB successor

Right when you have the schedule for it, you want a current warranty and a support path, and the installation can absorb different dimensions and different controls.

Wrong when the lead time lands past your outage window, or the footprint, lug positions and conduit entries do not line up — a successor model is not automatically a drop-in, and the retrofit labour can cost more than the switch.

Retrofit the controls

Right when the power section is sound and it is the electronics that died. This is the common case: the mechanism is a lump of copper and steel, the controller is a circuit board from the 1990s, and only one of those has a life expectancy.

Wrong when the contacts are pitted, the mechanism is tired, or the unit is undersized for what the building now draws. A new controller on a worn switch buys you a more accurate view of a problem you still have.

Find the original

Right when you need like-for-like — same footprint, same lugs, same conduit entries, no re-engineering, no new submittal — or you need it in days rather than seasons. Discontinued does not mean none exist; it means none are being made.

Wrong when you have time and budget and the installation is due a refresh anyway. In that case option 1 is genuinely the better buy and we will tell you so.

Option 3 is our lane. Cancelled orders, decommissioned facilities, surplus dealers, reconditioning shops and contractor overstock all hold real, built units that never show up in a distributor search — and a retired model is precisely the kind of thing that turns up in them, because the reason it is out of the catalogue is not that it stopped existing.

Is my GE Zenith transfer switch still supported?

Partly, and less every year. ABB inherited the line and still publishes support information for existing GE installations, but the switches themselves are out of production and most factory spare parts have been discontinued. Support in the sense of “someone will answer a technical question” is not the same as support in the sense of “a replacement part will arrive”, and it is the second one that matters at two in the morning.

What replaced the GE Zenith ZTG series?

ABB-branded ZTX equivalents are where the factory points ZTG and ZTGD owners. Treat that as a direction rather than a drop-in: a successor model in the same amperage is not automatically the same physical unit, and dimensions, lug positions, conduit entry and withstand rating all need checking against your submittal before anyone orders anything.

Can I still get parts for a GE Zenith automatic transfer switch?

Some, for now. Most factory replacement parts for the older GE Zenith switches have been discontinued, and what remains is held by parts specialists and surplus channels rather than by the manufacturer. Availability is thin and shrinking, and it varies enormously by model and by which decade the unit was built in — which is why the model and serial number are the first two things we ask for.

Do I have to replace the whole switch if only the controller failed?

Usually not, and this is the single most expensive assumption people make on this page. The MX150 and MX250 controllers are discontinued, but control retrofits exist and the power section they bolt onto — enclosure, busbar, main contacts — is typically in fine condition. Replace the whole unit when the mechanism is worn, the contacts are pitted, or the switch is undersized for what the building now draws. Not simply because the electronics died.

Will a new ABB switch drop straight into my old GE Zenith footprint?

Do not assume it will. Same amperage does not mean same cabinet. Check overall dimensions, mounting, lug size and position, conduit entry locations and the withstand rating against the original submittal before committing. Where the retrofit work turns out to cost more than the switch — which happens more often than people expect — finding a like-for-like unit becomes the cheaper answer as well as the faster one.

Can I still buy a discontinued GE Zenith transfer switch at all?

Often, yes. Discontinued means none are being built; it does not mean none exist. Cancelled orders, decommissioned facilities, surplus dealers, reconditioning shops and contractor overstock all hold real, built units that never appear in a distributor search, and retired models are exactly what turns up in them.
